OVER 400 FLOOD VICTIMS IN CHIENGE DISTRICT RECEIVE BASIC NEEDS.
Chienge, Luapula, 16th May 2025 – GOVERNMENT through the Chienge Town Council and the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit DMMU in Luapula Province has donated undisclosed amount of food and non-food items to over 1000 flood victims in the district.
Last month, over 400 households lost their homes and property in the district following the heavy rainfall.
The affected villages are Pilyasha, Miyongo and Chikoko. The victims have been relocated to Kasembe area where they have been aided with some basic needs such as food and shelter.
Deputy District Disaster Management Committee Chairperson who is also the Chienge Town Council Secretary, Mr. Hamwende Mpande says government is committed to ensuring that the victims are supported with the essential basic needs.
Mr. Mphande says the council is working with DMMU and the Red Cross to ensure that the flood victims are well looked after and are assisted with aid during this period until they stabilize.
However, the Council Secretary is concerned that this is not the first time such a calamity has happened in the district especially along the shores of Lake Mweru and that the majority of the victims are fishermen.
He says the fishermen have been advised several times not to build their permanent structures or houses near the lake or fishing camps as it possesses a great danger to their lives and those of their families.
