Chienge District is mostly rural with a poor road network which has resulted in the District having limited economic activities. As such, the economy of the District is predominantly Agriculture and Fishing with no formal industry, however, a few people are engaged in selling groceries in small shops especially in densely populated areas like Mununga, Puta, Lunchinda and Lambwe Chomba, in order to sustain their livelihoods. There are also hammer mills dotted around the District which help the general populace to grind maize and cassava for mealie meal. The District therefore, requires formal industries, the introduction of a commercial market and a commercial bank to facilitate trade in the District.
